On 3 October 2023, Bill 171 of 2023 was filed. It aims to modify section 57, sub-section 12 of the Labour Code to create a terminal illness leave.

This new leave would be paid, and an employer would be required to approve it for a duration of ten days.

Its purpose is to enable employees to provide necessary care to their spouse, long-term partner, or a relative within the second degree of blood relation, first degree of marital connection, or second-degree civil partnership, who is suffering from a terminal illness or a severe medical condition resulting from a serious accident. This would apply provided that the employee can demonstrate that the individual they are caring for requires ongoing attention or palliative care to manage pain and other related symptoms.
