- This amendment reflects Sweden’s intention to better support families with children who require additional care.
From 1 January 2026, Sweden has introduced expanded rules for VAB. The reform broadens the circumstances in which parents may take paid time off work to support their child.
Previously limited to situations where a child was ill, VAB can now also be used in three additional scenarios. Parents are entitled to benefit when:
- Attending meetings at a school or preschool to train staff on a child’s special needs.
- Participating in meetings related to a child’s illness or disability.
- Taking part in social services’ assessments or investigations concerning a child’s need for protection or support.
The amendment is intended to better reflect the practical realities facing families with children who require extra support. By widening VAB eligibility, the legislation ensures parents are not forced to choose between their work responsibilities and essential collaboration with schools or public authorities.
