Key governance rules under the EU AI Act took effect on 2 August 2025, introducing new compliance duties for organisations developing or deploying general-purpose AI.
The Irish government has designated 15 national competent authorities with responsibility for overseeing and enforcing the EU AI Act, including the Central Bank of Ireland and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
A National AI Office is to be established by 2 August 2026 which will co-ordinate the activities of these designated authorities to ensure consistent implementation of the EU AI Act.
