In May 2024, Colorado became the first US state to enact a regulatory framework governing the development and use of AI when Governor Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 24-205. At the time of signing, Governor Polis expressed reservations and urged lawmakers to amend the Act before its February 1, 2026 effective date to simplify the “complex compliance regime” imposed on “all developers and deployers doing business in Colorado.” On August 28, 2025, Colorado extended the act’s compliance deadlines from February 1, 2026 to June 30, 2026, allowing time for potential revisions to the Colorado AI Act.
